Magda Paiva (São Paulo, Brazil) is a visual artist who holds a degree in Fine Arts from FAAP (Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado), where she studied drawing and painting under Carlos Alberto Fajardo. She participated as a docent at the 1985 and 1987 São Paulo International Biennials, experiences that expanded her interest in the relationships between art, perception, and space.

For more than two decades, she worked in the development and installation of exhibitions for cultural institutions and artists throughout Brazil, cultivating a deep understanding of the relationship between artwork, architecture, and audience circulation.

Since 2020, she has dedicated herself exclusively to painting. Between 2024 and 2025, she undertook mentorship and studio guidance with Sérgio Fingermann, further developing her investigation into pictorial language and the construction of the visual field.

For Magda, painting has never been merely an image, but rather a mode of perception and presence in the world. Her practice emerges from an attempt to engage with that which is still in the process of becoming—forces, displacements, and instabilities that precede definitive form. She does not begin with a fixed image; instead, painting unfolds as an event, constructed through the tension between the graphic and the painterly, between what emerges and what still resists appearing.

Over many years, her experience in exhibition design and the construction of exhibitions deepened her relationship with space, bodily movement, and the ways in which an artwork is perceived. Today, she understands this experience as profoundly embedded within her artistic practice. Space has ceased to function merely as a support and has become an active component of the painting itself.

In the series Anaphora, she investigates this continuous state of emergence, in which the image acquires its presence while simultaneously coming into being. Lines vibrate, shift, and traverse the pictorial field, creating zones of tension that call for a bodily and perceptual engagement from the viewer.

The idea of epiphany appears as a moment of condensation—a provisional instant in which different forces come into alignment and painting reveals itself as presence. Her work does not seek to represent the world, but rather to accompany the moment in which something begins to come into existence.
